The entire process of producing, organization,
preservation, and socialization of information
represents an act of identity and responsibility
of professionals and technicians in our societies.
Nevertheless, the immobility and the exclusion
of sociopolitical topics on the agendas of professional
associations and public policies at the local,
regional, and national levels have impeded developing
and articulating solution proposals; as well as
introducing social and economic transformations
in our professional work.
The SFIDL is the continuation
of the First Social Forum of Information,
Documentation and Libraries (Buenos Aires,
Argentina, August 26-28, 2004) and its purpose
is Latin American interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary
integration in order to establish an agenda of
professional activities, offering results from
professional and academic experiences and promoting
initiatives as mechanisms of social transformation
and improved policies from information sciences.

and participation are free

and the development of self-management.

involved in the processing of information and cooperation
between groups, organizations, and institutions,
under an orientation focused on the development
of a democratic environment for the construction
